Chinese hackers selling new virus designed to steal online game passwords for USD 120
Shanghai. (Interfax-China) - A new virus, designed to steal passwords for the enormously popular online game "Legend of Mir," is now being sold online for as much as RMB 1,000 (USD 120.8). This new virus (Trojan.PSW.LMir.qh) has been dubbed "Legend Killer at the Net Bar," Lu Lan, an official with Rising Technology, told Interfax. Rising is one of China's leading anti-virus software makers.
This new virus "Legend Killer at the Net Bar" is being promoted as an easy tool for stealing "Legend of Mir" passwords at Internet cafes. Once installed on a computer at an Internet bar, the virus is able to steal the passwords of players logged onto their "Legend of Mir" accounts via that specific Internet cafe's network. Weapons, supplies, online money and other virtual goods associated with the "Legend of Mir" online game can be easily sold for real money. It is not uncommon in China for online game characters with high skill-levels to sell for more than a hundred U.S. dollars.
"This new virus is surprisingly powerful," Lu noted. "It is a different variety of Trojan virus than ones we have seen in the past. It is being sold directly through a hacking website and was designed specifically to target online game players at Internet bars. Once the virus begins to run at an Internet bar, it can easily steal passwords and personal information from any user playing the online game at the same venue." Rising has already reported the website to public security authorities.
The new "Legend Killer at the Net Bar" virus is not the first virus to be sold via the Internet by Chinese hackers. As Interfax previously reported, hackers placed a very conspicuous ad online earlier this month advertising a service that would custom make viruses for between USD 12-24. The practice of selling computer viruses is nothing new in China. The business has existed underground for a substantial period of time, but has more recently become increasingly blatant in its advertising.
